Over the past two weeks, my learning has centered on connecting organizational theory with the practical realities of my work in IT Services. This period has helped me deepen my understanding of how political and symbolic dynamics shape organizational behavior, while also reinforcing the importance of structure, accountability, and proactive leadership in my day‑to‑day responsibilities.
Academically, I strengthened my ability to apply Bolman and Deal’s political and symbolic frames to real organizational challenges. I learned how power, influence, culture, and meaning operate beneath the surface of formal structures, shaping decisions, communication patterns, and perceptions of equity. These frames helped me see how informal coalitions, symbolic status, and unspoken norms can reinforce or disrupt organizational learning. This multi‑frame perspective has made my analysis more nuanced and theoretically grounded.
I also improved my scholarly writing discipline. I gained a clearer understanding of the expectations for doctoral‑level work, including the need to integrate direct evidence from course texts, maintain a formal academic tone, and apply APA 7 formatting with precision. The feedback I received pushed me to refine how I support arguments and present analysis with greater clarity and rigor.
Professionally, my responsibilities over the past two weeks aligned closely with these academic insights. I have been documenting processes, identifying operational gaps, and helping establish clearer structures within the ITS department. I have also been preparing for the reality that increased accountability and transparency can create resistance. This required me to think intentionally about coaching the team through change, maintaining clarity around expectations, and keeping the focus on measurable outcomes. Much of my work has involved addressing knowledge gaps, improving consistency, and helping shift the department from a reactive, fire‑driven mode toward a more proactive and strategic approach.
Bringing these experiences together, I learned how essential it is for leaders to balance political awareness, symbolic meaning, and structural clarity. The past two weeks reinforced that effective leadership requires both theoretical understanding and practical discipline — and that organizational learning happens when these dimensions are intentionally aligned.
