Serbian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Serbian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls🌿 Ingredients(All lovingly depicted in your visual, of course)
  • 1 large head of cabbage (kupus)
  • 400g ground pork (svinjetina)
  • 100g rice (pirinač)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped (luk)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil (ulje)
  • Bay leaves, optional
  • 1 red bell pepper, finely diced (optional twist)
  • Tomato sauce or broth, enough to cover the rolls
🍳 Instructions1. Prep the Cabbage
  • Bring a large pot of water to boil.
  • Core the cabbage and gently peel off whole leaves.
  • Blanch leaves for 1–2 minutes until pliable. Drain and pat dry.
2. Mix the Filling
  • In a bowl, combine pork, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, pepper, salt, and oil.
  • Mix well until the filling holds together. Add diced pepper if you’re going rogue.
3. Roll Like You Mean It
  • Lay out a cabbage leaf, add a heaping spoonful of filling near the stem end.
  • Fold sides in and roll tightly. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
4. Pot It Up
  • Layer the bottom of a large pot with any leftover cabbage leaves.
  • Place rolls seam-side down in concentric circles.
  • Add bay leaves in between layers for aroma.
  • Pour tomato sauce or savory broth to cover the rolls.
  • Cover with a plate or smaller lid to hold them down.
5. Low & Slow
  • Simmer over low heat for 1–1½ hours.
  • Resist the urge to stir—these rolls like to stay cozy.
🍽️ To Serve
  • Spoon out gently, top with sour cream, and pair with crusty somun or Balkan rye.
  • Serve hot, ideally with rakija in hand and stories flying.
