Taking inspiration from Al Michaels’ unforgettable exclamation during the 1980 Miracle on Ice, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to look at your own journey and feel that same mix of disbelief, pride, and “I actually did this.”
Because honestly… that’s exactly how I feel about my education, my career, and the path I’ve fought to build.
I’m halfway through my EdD program.
I’ve changed careers.
I’ve rebuilt, restarted, and reimagined my life more times than I can count.
And somehow, every time I thought I hit a ceiling, life handed me a sledgehammer and said, “Try again.”
Five‑week doctoral courses? Brutal.
Balancing work, family, and research? A circus act.
Trying to stay caffeinated enough to read qualitative methodology at 1 AM? A sport of its own.
But here’s the truth:
Every challenge has sharpened me.
Every setback has redirected me.
Every chapter has prepared me for the next one.
And somewhere along the way, I realized something important — the story I’m writing isn’t just mine. It’s for every student who feels overwhelmed. Every professional who thinks it’s too late to pivot. Every person who wonders if they’re capable of more.
You are.
You absolutely are.
If a kid from Serbia can build a life in the U.S., launch a cultural project, shift careers, and pursue a doctorate while juggling everything else… then trust me, your story is still wide open.
So here’s my version of that Miracle on Ice moment:
What once felt impossible is now my reality — built through discipline, resilience, and a refusal to quit.
And I’m not done yet.
